Whether you’re renovating your home, building a granny flat, or relocating your meter box, there’s a step many homeowners don’t plan for: getting your power safely disconnected before the work starts, and reconnected once everything is ready.
A disconnect and reconnect service does exactly that. A licensed Level 2 electrician isolates your property from the electricity network, allows the other work to go ahead safely, and then restores your connection once the job is done.
Simple in concept, but it’s work that only an accredited Level 2 ASP electrician can carry out legally in NSW.
When Do You Actually Need One?
Not every electrical job calls for a full disconnect and reconnect, but there are some common situations where it’s required.
Renovations and structural work
If a builder or tradie needs to work near your service lines or meter board, those cables need to be de-energised first. Getting this right protects workers on site and keeps your project compliant.
Meter box relocations
Moving your meter to a new position on the property? Your existing connection has to be safely isolated before that work can begin.
Demolition
Any demolition involving areas near your electrical service entry will need a formal disconnect before the machinery moves in.
Building removals or relocations
If a structure is being moved off a block, the power needs to come off first, full stop.
New builds and subdivisions
Properties connecting to the grid for the first time often require a formal reconnect service once their infrastructure is in place.
What’s Involved in the Process?
A disconnect and reconnect isn’t something you can book the night before. There are a few steps involved, and timing matters.
Your Level 2 electrician lodges a request with the network distributor (for most of the Central Coast, that’s Ausgrid). A date and time is confirmed for the isolation. On the day, the electrician attends site, safely disconnects your supply, and the other work can proceed.
Once the project is complete, the reconnect is scheduled the same way. Your electrician returns, confirms everything is safe and compliant, and restores your power.
Because the whole process runs through your Level 2 ASP, choosing someone who knows the network requirements and typical turnaround times can make a real difference to your project timeline.
How Long Does It Take?
Timelines vary depending on the distributor’s scheduling and the scope of work involved. Most disconnect and reconnect jobs are completed within a few days to a week per stage. Urgent requests may be possible in some cases, but these are subject to availability.
If you’re planning a renovation, it pays to book early. A delay at this stage can hold up your entire project.
Why You Can’t DIY This
Disconnecting from the electricity network is regulated work in NSW. Touching the service lines or metering equipment without Level 2 accreditation is not just illegal, it’s dangerous. The network distributor also requires formal notification before any work is carried out.
A licensed Level 2 ASP handles all of that coordination on your behalf, keeping your project safe and legally compliant from start to finish.
