Most homes across Australia run on single-phase power. For everyday use, it handles things fine: lights, appliances, a split-system air conditioner, even a standard EV charger. But for some properties, single-phase supply starts to become a limitation.
If you’re running a home workshop with heavy machinery, operating a business from your property, planning a large solar and battery setup, or looking at faster EV charging, a three-phase power upgrade could be exactly what your property needs.
What’s the Difference Between Single and Three-Phase Power?
Single-phase power delivers electricity through one active wire at 230 volts. Most residential properties in Australia are supplied this way.
Three-phase power uses three active wires simultaneously, providing 415 volts between phases. More power can be delivered to the property at once, which suits high-demand equipment and large-scale energy systems.
For a more detailed breakdown, our post on single vs three-phase power covers the technical differences in plain language.
Who Actually Needs Three-Phase Power?
Not every home needs an upgrade. But there are some clear situations where single-phase supply starts to cause problems.
Tradies and home workshops
Large air compressors, industrial welders, and commercial-grade equipment often require three-phase supply to operate correctly. If you’re running a workshop from your property, single-phase may not cut it.
Properties with large solar and battery systems
Some high-capacity solar inverters and battery storage setups are designed for three-phase connections, which can improve performance and balance energy across the system more effectively.
Faster EV charging
Certain home EV chargers, particularly commercial-grade or high-speed units, require three-phase power to deliver quicker charge rates. If you’re planning to charge a vehicle overnight and want more flexibility, it’s worth looking into.
Commercial or light industrial use
If you’re running a business from your property and energy demands are growing, three-phase supply gives you the capacity to scale without constantly hitting your limits.
Larger homes with multiple high-draw appliances
Ducted air conditioning, electric pool heating, an induction cooktop, and a large oven running simultaneously can strain a single-phase supply. A three-phase upgrade provides the headroom to run everything without issues.
What Does the Upgrade Process Look Like?
A three-phase upgrade isn’t just a change to your switchboard. It requires a supply upgrade from the electricity network, coordinated by a Level 2 ASP electrician. Here’s a general overview of how the process works:
- Your Level 2 electrician assesses your existing supply and switchboard setup.
- An application is submitted to Ausgrid (the network distributor for most of the Central Coast) for a three-phase supply connection.
- The network upgrades the connection at the street, which may involve overhead or underground service work.
- Your switchboard is upgraded to accommodate the three-phase circuits.
- The system is tested, certified, and energised.
Because this involves both private property work and network infrastructure, only a Level 2 ASP can manage the full process from end to end. Our ASP Level 2 Electrician Services page has more detail on what that accreditation means in practice.
What Does a Three-Phase Upgrade Cost?
Costs vary depending on your property’s location, existing infrastructure, the complexity of the network connection, and whether your switchboard also needs upgrading as part of the job.
As a general guide, residential three-phase upgrades on the Central Coast can range from a few thousand dollars upward, with larger or more complex properties sitting at the higher end. If your switchboard is due for a refresh anyway, our switchboard upgrades guide is worth a read before you get quotes.
The best starting point is a proper site assessment so you receive a quote that reflects your actual situation.
